Over the years, many films, tv shows, and commercials have been shot right here in Homewood. Now there is a push to keep that momentum going, and your property could be part of it.

So what do you do? Take photos of a property you own and upload them using the button below. Once submitted, your location becomes visible to industry professionals looking for places to film. If there is interest, the film office will reach out directly.

Film Birmingham has brought together all 34 municipalities in Jefferson County to create a more film friendly region. It is a coordinated effort to highlight what makes communities like Homewood stand out, from our neighborhoods and parks to our downtown and unique spaces.

Sprucing Up Our Street Corners

As part of spring cleaning across Homewood, crews have been replacing old and aging street signs. So far, about 547 of the city’s roughly 572 signs have been updated, with the remaining to be finished by the end of May.

They are made in house by our Traffic Department, led by Randy Hambly. His team designs, produces, and installs them. This includes street name signs, parking signs, speed limit signs, and warning signs like school crossings, pedestrian crossings, dead end signs, and stop ahead signs.

Producing these in house saves the city close to $24k each year and allows crews to respond faster by designing, making, and installing signs without waiting on outside vendors.

On average, the city makes about 250 to 300 signs each year. Materials are sourced from trusted suppliers, including one based in West Homewood, which allows for quick turnaround on orders and keeps the process moving efficiently.

This is one of many ways the Traffic Department works each day to serve our residents and keep things running smoothly across the city.

The Coat of Arms Spring Scramble 5k is from 5:30pm to about 7:00pm. The route runs through downtown along Central Avenue and Manhattan Street. Expect closures and delays near the route.

18th Street Paving Begins April 6

Crews will begin milling and paving 18th St South from Oxmoor Rd to Rosedale Drive starting Monday, April 6.

Work will take place at night beginning at 8pm and finish each day before morning traffic to help reduce impacts.

Garbage & Debris Reminders

Homewood uses two services to collect garbage and debris . Each one handles different materials:

Amwaste – Garbage and Recycling

The Amwaste truck collects household garbage and recycling on your regular pickup days. Household garbage should be bagged and placed in your garbage cart, and boxes should be broken down before putting them in the cart. Carts should be placed out by 6:00am on your pickup days.

Reminders:

Residents can place up to three carts at the curb. You can use other types of cans/carts as long as they are 45 gal and larger. They don’t have to be an Amwaste or Republic cart. As long as you have one black Amwaste cart, or blue Republic cart, Amwaste will not provide any more. But if you have not received a black Amwaste cart, request one here.
If you have (3) bags or less of small debris, leaves, pine straw, grass clippings, or small limbs, place them in your garbage cart to be picked up by Amwaste, not at the curb.

City of Homewood Claw Truck – Debris and Bulk Piles

The City of Homewood operates a “claw truck” that collects large debris piles such as tree limbs, brush, and other bulk yard debris placed at the curb. The truck runs weekly Monday through Thursday based on your neighborhood schedule, and residents do not need to request pickup. Please do not place debris near mailboxes, utility poles, signs, walls, or storm drains. The truck has to position itself to reach your debris pile.

Reminders:

Small debris, leaves, pine straw, grass clippings, and small limbs should be bagged, and you must have a minimum of (4) bags to place at the curb to be picked up by the claw truck. If you have (3) bags or less, they must go in your garbage cart for pick up by Amwaste, and will not be picked up by the claw truck.
Single branches will not be picked up. It must be a pile.
All construction or landscaping debris must be removed by the contractor.

A Safe Way to Cross Highway 280 is Coming!

For years, residents have asked for a safer way to cross Highway 280 at the Hollywood Boulevard overpass. What once felt like a long standing concern is now moving forward in a real and visible way.

Nearly 20,000 cars cross the bridge every day. Yet it was built in 1960 as a two lane bridge with no protected pedestrian access. At the same time, walkers, runners, and cyclists regularly move between Birmingham, Mountain Brook, and Homewood along this corridor. The need has been clear for a long time.

This effort has been discussed for more than fourteen years, bringing together Homewood, Mountain Brook, Birmingham, and Jefferson County. It is a great example of regional cooperation, recognizing that road users do not see city limits when they drive or walk. An avid runner, Mayor Jennifer Andress facilitated those early conversations, asking how they could correct a serious pedestrian safety issue and strengthen regional connectivity. And now, they are!

Phase one focuses on new sidewalks in Mountain Brook and along Hollywood Boulevard from Malaga Avenue up to the bridge. Construction is expected to begin this summer and will take approximately eight months. There will be some temporary lane shifts and possible lane closures during construction, with coordination among the cities to limit disruption.

Phase two will widen the bridge, add a third vehicle lane, install a new traffic light at the exit ramp off Highway 280, add a new turn lane onto the existing on ramp to Highway 280 East, and create a protected pedestrian facility behind a concrete barrier wall. That portion is expected to go out for bid in 2027, with roughly 12 months of construction once underway.

Funding for the sidewalk phase reflects a broad partnership that includes federal and state support, county participation, municipal cooperation, and private contributions from community groups and local organizations. The bridge widening phase will combine federal transportation dollars with a county match.

Homewood has no financial obligation for this project.

After years of steady conversations, planning, and partnership, safer passage across Highway 280 is no longer just an idea. It is moving toward construction and becoming part of the way our communities connect.

A public presentation of findings is expected before summer budget discussions. Council also reviewed an intergovernmental agreement related to pedestrian sidewalks near the Highway 280 bridge, introduced updates to the Homewood Board of Zoning Adjustments ordinance to align with the council manager structure, and continued discussion on the city manager employment agreement and other carryover items.

Council Meeting - February 23, 2026

Homewood took two important steps Monday night that will shape how our city operates for years to come. By appointing a permanent city manager and investing in an organizational study, Council focused not just on today’s needs, but on building strong foundations for the future. In a unanimous 5 to 0 vote, Council appointed Carl Smith as Homewood’s first permanent city manager and approved his employment agreement. The Council also approved a $36,907 budget amendment to hire MGT Impact Solutions to conduct a citywide organizational study. That review will look at staffing structure, efficiency, and long range planning as the city prepares for the next budget cycle. They approved a little over $1k in travel reimbursement for an out of state city manager candidate, and reappointed William Johnson to the Board of Zoning Adjustments.

Cale Smith Named Permanent City Manager

The City of Homewood has selected Cale Smith as the first permanent City Manager in the city’s 100-year history. The Homewood City Council voted Monday evening to authorize Mayor Jennifer Andress to offer him the position. You can watch that meeting above.

This milestone follows years of discussion about creating a full-time City Manager role. In 2024, voters approved a referendum to move Homewood to a council-manager form of government. City leaders then transitioned from interim leadership to establishing a permanent position to oversee daily operations and long-term planning.

Cale shared this, “I’m thankful for the trust the City Council has placed in me. I care deeply about Homewood and am proud to both serve and live here. This is a community that values its future and expects strong, steady leadership. This permanent appointment brings stability for our staff and our residents as we approach our 100th year. My focus remains on professionalism, transparency, and consistent progress for our city.”

Special Assistant to the City Manager Sam Gaston added that he has been impressed with Cale’s leadership and commitment to doing the right things for long term success, including joining ICMA and being selected for Leadership ICMA.

Background and Transition
Cale has lived in Homewood for over 20 years, and has been employed since 2021, first as Director of Engineering and Zoning, and then most recently as Interim City Manager. He was appointed interim following the departure of former City Manager Glen Adams. The City launched a national and state search process. Applications were posted through local, state, and national municipal associations, including ICMA and the state City Manager Association. The search drew 61 applicants . After review by HR Director Kim Kinder and Special Assistant Sam Gaston, 14 qualified candidates were identified for interviews. Eleven candidates completed initial interviews, and five finalists advanced to extended interviews before the Council’s final deliberation.

Why Cale Smith
Council members pointed to Cale Smith’s deep knowledge of Homewood, strong infrastructure background, and steady leadership as Interim City Manager. They noted there would be no learning curve, as he is already managing major projects and working closely with staff, Council, and residents.

Mayor Jennifer Andress highlighted his leadership on the new comprehensive plan, stormwater improvements, fleet inventory, city communications, citizen survey, and regional partnerships, saying he is already doing the work needed to move Homewood forward.

What Happens Next
The Council’s vote authorizes the Mayor to extend a formal offer. A negotiated written employment agreement will be presented for approval at an upcoming Council meeting.

With this decision, Homewood formally establishes its first permanent City Manager, a historic step in the City’s Centennial year and a significant evolution in its governance structure.

City Council approved two new streetlights for some well used spots around Homewood. A new light on Cobb Street near Hall-Kent will improve visibility helping keep children and families safe.

Another streetlight was approved at the crosswalk along Old Montgomery Highway and the Greenway Trail, a popular stretch for runners, walkers, and anyone enjoying the trail!

Planning Ahead for a More Efficient Fleet

A key item from this meeting was the proposal to bring in Mercury Associates for a comprehensive fleet maintenance study, that will review current fleet operations, right size vehicles across departments, and update outdated policies and procedures. This will provide data driven decisions about how the city manages hundreds of vehicles across departments and how taxpayer dollars are spent long term. The goal is to improve efficiency, control costs, and better inform upcoming budget decisions.

Council also agreed to move several items forward to the council meeting, including a request from the Miss Alabama Organization to use council chambers for its annual meeting, permission for sewer work in the Frisco Street right of way tied to residential development, and approval for Track Shack to place a temporary tent in the right of way for its annual sale. Growing the Greenway

The meeting opened with an update from the Jefferson County Greenways Commission, highlighting the city’s long standing role in supporting a regional greenway system that connects communities across borders. The update also touched on future trail connections, including plans to link Shades Creek Greenway through West Oxmoor into Red Mountain Park.

Red Mountain Park sits right on Homewood’s edge and is one of the most used areas of the park outside Birmingham, a reminder that these green spaces belong to everyone. Homewood was one of the first cities to invest in the vision of a connected regional greenway network, helping protect and maintain public spaces that residents walk, run, bike, and enjoy every day.

Council approved amended development plans for Homewood Community Church and Brookdale University Park, including a new building and a pickleball court, advanced a Rebuild Alabama grant application, added streetlights near a school and along the Greenway Trail, authorized use of council chambers by the Miss Alabama organization, and moved forward with a fleet maintenance study.

BZA Remains Consistent On Setback Relief

At the Feb. 5, 2026 meeting, the Board of Zoning Adjustments denied a variance request for 216 Acton Avenue, a decision that matters because it signals the board is remaining consistent on lot coverage and setback relief.

The variance request for 320 La Prado Circle was carried over to the next BZA meeting after it became clear during discussion, that the impervious surface calculations may not reflect recent changes to the property, including removal and rebuilding of a deck. At the applicant’s request, the board agreed to continue the case to a future meeting so updated and accurate information could be reviewed.

The City Council set a unified course for the City Manager selection. In a special called Council meeting on January 29, city leaders focused on how Homewood moves forward in selecting its next city manager. Council members discussed transparency and timing considerations, and emphasized the importance of unity and shared support behind the final hire.

They unanimously agreed to continue the current interview process, keeping it structured and professional while allowing council members to help shape follow up questions that will further evaluate the finalists.

The meeting reviewed progress so far, including 61 applications received, first round interviews nearing completion, and a forthcoming shortlist of candidates. The approved resolution keeps interviews facilitated by staff experts while incorporating council input, and it passed 5 to 0.

Homewood residents took part in a hands on Comprehensive Plan workshop, Wednesday, January 28, sharing what they love about the city and where they see room to grow.

People highlighted places like downtown, Edgewood, Central Park, Patriot Park, our schools, and neighborhood character as strengths worth protecting. They also pointed to areas like Brookwood Mall, Green Springs, Valley Avenue, and Rosedale as places that need attention.

Common themes focused on safety, sidewalks, connectivity, stormwater, and making it easier to move around the city.

This is part of Homewood’s Comprehensive Planning process. Another workshop is happening today, Thursday,January 29 from 9:00am to 7:00pm at the Senior Center, and you can drop by anytime. There will also be several more opportunities to take part throughout the year.

The City of Homewood is starting work on a new city-wide Comprehensive Plan. This plan will serve as a roadmap for how Homewood grows, invests, and serves its residents over the next 25 years. Homewood’s current Comprehensive Plan was adopted in 2007. Since then, a lot has changed, and more change is coming. With the city moving to a Council-Manager form of government , this is a key time to clarify what matters most to residents. The plan will help inform capital improvements, public service priorities, housing trends, transportation needs, and future land use. It will also give newly elected officials clear direction on what the community values.

Your Voice, Your City
Every resident will have a chance to be involved. This isn’t just a document, it’s a shared vision for Homewood’s future, shaped by the people who live here. The plan will reflect the needs of each of the city’s four wards and identify short, medium, and long-term projects for both public and private investment. Whether it's about where new housing fits, what kinds of businesses we want, or how we move around, this process is about making those choices together.

The letters, signed by Mayor Andress, support Andrews Sports Medicine as it moves through the state’s required certificate of need process. Council also noted that surrounding municipalities are joining in this effort and signing similar letters of support, reflecting regional alignment around the project and its potential to expand outpatient care options across the area. The action is procedural and allows the project to continue through the state review process with local and regional backing in place.

Mayor Jennifer Andress presented a proclamation in recognition of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, that honored the lives lost, and reinforced Homewood’s commitment to standing against antisemitism, hate, and dehumanization in all forms. She also said City Hall will be lit yellow, a visible and intentional act that reminded the community why memory, education, and moral clarity still matter.

Council formally dropped the Linden Avenue on street parking proposal, voted to condemn an unsafe structure on 26th Avenue South, heard and carried over two development items for a February 9 vote, one for Homewood Community Church and one for a Brookdale University Park pickleball court. They approved letters of support for Brookwood Baptist and Princeton ambulatory surgery centers, approved vouchers, approved use of the City Hall plaza for Taste of Homewood, and finalized council liaison appointments for boards and commissions.

Council had an item to consider whether Homewood should ask the Alabama Attorney General for guidance on the state law that requires a city manager to live inside the city limits they serve. Considering the current search underway for this position, council discussed the residency requirement from multiple perspectives, weighing the goal of attracting the strongest possible candidates who may not be able or willing to move to Homewood, against community expectations councilors have heard from residents, that the city manager live in Homewood and be fully invested in the city. It was clarified that this request only seeks legal clarification, not a policy decision.

At the State of the City Address, January 20, 2026, Mayor Jennifer Andress shared a clear and detailed look at where Homewood stands and where it is going.

The city closed 2025 with a $2.1 million surplus after employee bonuses and a 4.5 percent cost of living adjustment. Sales tax, property tax, lodging tax, business licenses, and Parks and Rec revenue all increased, with a 2026 budget of $75.6 million.

Major projects are underway, including the Shades Creek Pavilion and trailhead opening this spring, the Central Avenue TAP project, completion of the Green Springs sidewalk, the Highway 31 corridor project moving toward bid in 2026, and construction beginning next month on the long awaited I-65 diverging diamond interchange near Walmart.

The city is also launching its Comprehensive Plan, inviting residents to help shape the next 100 years, while continuing strong support for schools with $12 million dedicated to education in 2025.

Fire Engineer Karry Jones, Firefighter of the Year

Engineer Karry Jones is the Homewood Fire Department Firefighter of the Year! He is the person people count on for the behind the scenes work that keeps a modern fire department running, from equipment readiness to technical details that the public never sees but benefits from every day.

Even while recovering from an injury, Fire Chief Brandon Broadhead said he kept finding ways to help. He also served on the team that helped design Homewood’s newest fire trucks around how firefighters actually work in the field.

Karry’s mindset is simple and rare. Make Homewood better tomorrow than it is today.

Corporal Jordan Suggs, Officer of the Year

Corporal Jordan Suggs is the Homewood Police Department Officer of the Year! He is a steady leader, a trusted supervisor, and a big part of the work that keeps Homewood safe, including his role with K9 Vulcan and community engagement efforts throughout the year.

He also faced a moment no officer ever wants to face. In September 2025, while working a call on Green Springs Highway, Corporal Suggs encountered an armed suspect and acted to protect his fellow officer and nearby residents. We are grateful for his service, his courage, and the professionalism he brings every day.

Laura Tucker, Employee of the Year

Laura Tucker is the City of Homewood Employee of the Year, and her impact reaches far beyond the library walls. For 11 years, she has helped make the library a place where families feel welcome, where programs grow, and where service keeps getting better.

Her work has helped expand outreach, strengthen partnerships, and bring in major support, including a $65,000 grant to grow digital literacy, workforce development, and language learning. Laura leads with a quiet steadiness that makes everyone around her better. Homewood is better because she shows up the way she does.

Janie Mayer, Mike Kendrick Award

Jamie Mears is the first recipient of the 'Mike Kendrick Award' for service to the City of Homewood. She took an idea rooted in honoring her mother, Paula Stringfellow Ford, and helped turn it into something that shaped a tradition in Homewood and inspired similar events across the region. It is a celebration of the beautiful spirit of the survivors, fighters and angels that have battled cancer.

Homewood Witches Ride has grown from a small gathering into an event with hundreds of riders and more than a half million dollars raised to support cancer care and research. It has brought joy to our streets and real support to a serious fight. We are grateful for Jamie’s vision, her follow through, and the lasting good this has created.

Council Sets The Interview Process For Hiring City Manager

Pre-Council Meeting January 12, 2026

The January 12, 2026 pre-council meeting discussed the city manager search, with council reviewing interview procedures. HR Director Kim Kinder shared the job was posted December 19 with applications due January 16, listed the minimum qualifications, and said about 40 applications had been received so far. A resident asked why an ICMA credential was not required for candidates. Staff said keeping minimum requirements preserves flexibility given legal timelines and the residency requirement, while still aiming for a highly qualified hire.

Council also teed up three January 26, 6:00pm public hearings, the condemnation and planned demolition of an unsafe house at 1625 26th Avenue South, an amended plan for Homewood Community Church to build a new two story 30,797 square foot facility behind The Edge with added buffers plus stormwater and traffic controls, and Brookdale University Park’s plan to replace unused parking with a fenced pickleball court with no lights.

Linden Avenue Parking Change Put on Hold

Council Meeting January 12, 2026

At the January 12 City Council meeting, Council discussed a proposed change to on-street parking along Linden Avenue between Reese Street and Oxmoor Road, choosing to carry the item over for more study of the potential solution. Councilors agreed they want a fuller look at safety, existing yellow curbs, and traffic flow in both directions before making a decision that affects nearby residents and drivers. Council also approved budget amendments, stormwater planning, city manager interview procedures, surplus property, and highlighted the upcoming Comprehensive Plan kickoff meetings on January 28–29.

Reese Street Courtyard Project Variance Request Denied

At the January 8, 2026 meeting, the Board of Zoning Adjustments denied a request to reduce the required landscape buffer from 15 feet to 5 feet for the planned mixed use retail, office, and medical project on the vacant lot at 1707 Reese Street, called 'Reese Street Courtyard.' Located right behind Nall Daniels Animal Hospital, the concept has been in the works for several years and is meant to add new businesses and much needed parking. The board focused on the fact that the plan chose to build more parking than required. That decision created the conflict with the landscaping rules, rather than a hardship tied to the property itself.

The BZA also approved a front setback variance to allow a master bedroom to be added to the front of the house at 3410 Avalon Road, and approved a fence repair variance at 300 Woodland Drive.

Planning Commission Moves to Reshape the Green Springs Corridor

The only item for the Planning Commission meeting, January 6, 2026, was a request to amend the zoning ordinance for the Green Springs Urban Development District (GURD) by removing “minor vehicle repair” as a permitted use.

The discussion stemmed from concerns raised after approval of the Valvoline oil change project, (see link to video here: https://bit.ly/4qaJZqY ) with both the Planning Commission and City Council expressing that similar vehicle-focused uses do not match the long-term vision for the Green Springs corridor as a more pedestrian-friendly, connected boulevard. Staff explained that removing this use would prevent future oil change or similar facilities from locating in the district, while existing businesses could continue operating as nonconforming uses without expanding.

Commissioners also discussed the lack of a clear definition for “minor vehicle repair” in the zoning code and agreed it would be helpful for the city to formally define the term. Several residents spoke in support, citing past zoning decisions on Green Springs and urging a more holistic approach tied to the upcoming comprehensive plan.

After public input and discussion around the upcoming citywide comprehensive plan, the Planning Commission voted to recommend deleting minor vehicle repair from the GURD, 6-0 with one abstention, and asked City Council to consider adding a clear definition for the minor vehicle repair. This item will no go before the full Council for a vote.

Piggly Wiggly Closes Dec. 31 For Renovations

The Homewood Piggly Wiggly closes today, Dec. 31, at 6:00pm, prices are being reduced today as shelves are cleared.

This is a temporary pause as the store begins a major redevelopment. Plans include a larger and updated store, more parking, improved traffic flow, safer access for children using the nearby tunnel, and new green space.

The store is expected to reopen by the end of 2026.

What to do with those Christmas trees? Christmas may be over, but your tree can still do some good. Real trees can be reused in simple ways:

Cut branches for yard mulch
Add pieces to garden beds to protect plants
Use smaller limbs for outdoor habitat or compost.

You can also dispose of your tree easily in Homewood. We have bins at the Homewood Library or the West Oxmoor pool parking lot. Drop off your trees and/or cardboard boxes at those locations. Or you can place your tree at the curb for pickup on your trash day, and the claw truck will get them.

Hot Wheels Swap Spot

The City Council approved a request to place a shared toy box for Hot Wheels cars along the edge of Morris Boulevard. Andrew Elliot, the driver behind this project, worked closely with neighbors and hopes it will become a small gift to children who pass by.

The idea grew out of the Elliott family’s own story. Their boys love Hot Wheels, and they first saw something like this while visiting grandparents. Their five year old helped build the box with his grandparents, and both boys plan to serve as ‘Hot Wheel-brarians.’ They already have an inventory ready so empty spaces can be filled again.

They have spent many hours racing cars at home, naming each one, and turning simple toys into fun family championships. They hope this box invites other families to get outside and enjoy the surprise of finding a new car on a walk or a bike ride.

Their hope is simple:

“We hope the box serves as a blessing to others in the neighborhood! What's the most exciting toy / hot wheels car for a kid? A new one that you don't already have! Part of the ambition is that it gets kids around the neighborhood excited to go out on a family walk, bike ride, etc. - knowing it will result in bringing a new hot rod home!”

Homewood Strengthens Its Leadership Team

Homewood has voted to appoint Sam Gaston as the Special Assistant to the City Manager. This is a steady step as our city moves into a new form of government. Sam will work with city leadership and help guide the transition as we look to find a permanent City Manager.

Sam brings 45 years in local government management and planning. He recently retired after more than 32 years as the City Manager of Mountain Brook. His roots run deep in public service. He holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in public administration from Auburn University. He has served as president of the International City County Management Association, the Alabama City County Management Association, the Alabama Chapter of the American Planning Association, and the Homewood Mountain Brook Kiwanis Club.

Mayor Graham Smith of Mountain Brook offered this statement, "Sam’s decision to serve in Homewood is a gift to our entire region. He is one of the most respected municipal leaders in Alabama," she said. "His experience and steady leadership will be exactly what Homewood needs as it moves into this new government structure. Mountain Brook has benefited from his wisdom for decades and now our neighbors in Homewood will share in that same strength."

Homewood Mayor Jennifer Andress shared this, "We are excited and grateful to welcome Sam Gaston to Homewood as Special Assistant to the City Manager," she said. "Sam is the gold standard for city managers in Alabama. He encouraged our move toward a Council Manager form of government and we are thankful to have him join Cale Smith in this important season."
