GOVERNMENT
The Homewood City Council is the legislative branch of city government as defined by the 'Mayor-Council Act of the State of Alabama'. The mayor of Homewood is Patrick McClusky. Homewood is divided into 5 "wards" with 2 "places" within each ward. Each "place" has a council representative, so there are 10 councilors. There is also one council president elected at large. The mayor, council president and councilors are elected every four years, with an exception this year.
The next city election will take place in 2025. This shift is due to a new bill passed by the Alabama Legislature. The bill adds an extra year to terms for some lawmakers who were elected or re-elected in 2020. Why the change? It's to keep from having the city's election clash with the presidential election this November. This adjustment aims to streamline the voting process, reducing voter fatigue or confusion that could arise from handling multiple major ballots at once.
