Trees in Homewood

Trees are central to Homewood’s health, sustainability, and quality of life. We’re proud to be recognized as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation. Trees define our city’s character, bringing shade, beauty, and environmental benefits. By planting and preserving trees, we:

  • Strengthen our community’s natural beauty
  • Support wildlife and local ecosystems
  • Build a greener, more resilient future

Why Trees Matter

  • Cleaner Air – Absorb pollution and release oxygen, improving community health
  • Cooler Climate – Reduce heat, save energy, and make neighborhoods more livable
  • Smarter Water Use – Absorb rain, reduce runoff, and prevent erosion and flooding
  • Stronger Economy – Boost property values, cut energy bills, and attract visitors

Ordinance & Removal

Homewood has a tree ordinance in place to regulate the planting, maintenance, and removal of trees in the city, ensuring that the benefits of trees are preserved and protected for future generations. The ordinance requires property owners to obtain a permit before removing or pruning certain types of trees and encourages the planting of new trees to replace those that are removed.

Planting for the Future

We enjoy the shade of trees we did not plant. Many of these old friends are now coming down, and it’s our turn to continue the legacy.

By replanting, we restore what’s been lost and ensure future generations enjoy the same beauty, shade, and cleaner air.
