Item SV-251101: This case was a request for a variance at 13 Oak Moor Drive so a carport could be enclosed and turned into a master bedroom for a single mother, without changing the existing roof line or building footprint. The applicant explained that building in another spot on the lot would be much more expensive and might create lot coverage issues, but the board reminded him that personal and financial hardship cannot be used as the legal basis for a variance and that converting a nonconforming carport into heated living space requires meeting current setback rules. After questions about structure, alternatives, and how hardship is defined in the zoning code, the motion to approve did not receive the four votes required, so the variance request was denied.
Item SV-250702: The homeowner at 401 Devin Drive requested an eight-foot variance to place a metal fence closer to the property line, aiming to provide a safe play space for her children and dogs. She emphasized that the fence would still be at least 15 feet from the curb and would not impact visibility. She also noted similar fences in the neighborhood and clarified that the fence would be a four-foot open metal design, not a privacy fence. While the board discussed the style, location, and tree root protection, the request was ultimately denied.
