The City Council’s September 15 budget hearing focuses on Homewood’s proposed General Fund, that includes approximately $42.2 million for personnel, about 54 percent of the fund. It also includes costs for many of the services residents use every day like public works, parks and recreation, and other City operations.
For the first time, the proposed budget shows personnel costs by position instead of only providing one department-wide total. This more detailed approach gives the Council and residents a clearer picture of City staffing and creates a stronger foundation for future budgets.
Proposed salary lines were rebuilt using actual salaries, current vacancies and expected staffing needs. This helps City leaders make better staffing decisions, use public funds responsibly and ensure that we have the personnel needed to serve Homewood for many years to come.
The Council will also review funds covering education, opioid-settlement money, debt payments, environmental needs, insurance, emergency management and sales-tax revenue.
The budget remains a proposal, and the Council may make changes before considering it for adoption.
All budget hearings are open to the public and will be live streamed and recorded. Additional hearings are scheduled to begin at 4:00pm on September 17 and 21, with September 24 reserved for a final hearing if needed. The Council plans to consider adoption of the FY27 budget on Monday, September 28. Fiscal Year 2027 begins October 1.
