Not every dollar received by the City can be spent the same way.
That is the focus of Homewood’s September 17 budget hearing. The City Council reviews several smaller funds connected with municipal courts, corrections, narcotics enforcement, parks and other specific purposes.
These funds are kept separate from the General Fund because the money may come from a specific source or have rules about how it can be spent.
The hearing will include:
• Court and correction funds used for jail costs, court operations, judicial administration, and employee training and education
• Narcotics funds that separate seized money from regular enforcement expenses
• Park funds that separately track donations and Park Tower activity
• An accounts-payable clearing fund used to track payments as they are processed
Reviewing the funds separately helps ensure that restricted money is used properly, donations can be followed and expenses are not hidden within the larger budget.
Put simply, this approach makes it easier for the Council and residents to follow the money from the time it comes into the City until it is spent.
All budget hearings are open to the public and will be live streamed and recorded. The final scheduled hearing is set for 4:00pm on September 21. The Council plans to consider adoption of the FY27 budget on Monday, September 28. Fiscal Year 2027 begins October 1.
